This extremely informative and interesting webinar will discuss in depth the diagnosis and treatment of Polymyalgia rheumatica. It will be hosted by Dr Sarah Mackie and Dr Bharat Kandikonda, both well known experts in this area.

They will discuss what PMR is, how to diagnose it, how to treat it and when to refer on.

Sarah is an Associate Professor in Vascular Rheumatology at the University of Leeds and honorary consultant rheumatologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Her research centres around improving patient outcomes in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and giant cell arteritis (GCA), which includes addressing the side-effects of long-term steroid therapy. She was first author on the NICE-accredited British Society for Rheumatology clinical guideline on diagnosis and management of GCA. She co-chairs the OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology) PMR Working Group. She is Chief Investigator of the STERLING-PMR trial which they will start recruiting in 2023. She recently ran a patient involvement project called PMR Voices 2021 which yielded deep insights into the experiences of patients living with PMR. She’s a Patron of the charity PMRGCAuk.

Bharat qualified as Physician from National Medical University Kiev, Ukraine in 2003 (speak fluent Russian apart from English).Having completed nMRCGP in 2012, currently work as GP partner at Newlands Medical Centre, Middlesbrough which is a training practice for GP trainees and medical students. Additional role includes GPwSI in MSK Rheumatology working part- time alongside a consultant at James Cook Hospital.

He is also a Co-clinical Director for Greater Middlesbrough PCN since 2019.I provide clinical support supervision/training for FCP and also get involved in teaching medical students 3rd and 5th years respectively.

His areas of interest in primary care is to reduce steroid burden in conditions like PMR and GCA locally. He has undertaken a small audit work on this subject of PMR and duration of steroids which he will be able share with everyone.

Previously he has undertaken audit works on steroid induced osteoporosis and also managing/monitoring Gout in primary care.
