Dr Carol McCrum

Dr Carol McCrum

Dr Carol McCrum is currently in an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist role in Rheumatology, Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery/Spinal services. Carol has undertaken Injections within her clinical roles since 2000 and she has supported colleagues’ injection skill development across that time. Carol is a Non-medical prescriber and was responsible for developing and updating Patient Group Directions to support injection clinical practice by non-prescribing colleagues. She has a research interest both clinical effectiveness and procedural considerations with injections as an intervention option.

Dr Chris Ellis is PCRMM Co-president, and a GP Partner and a GP Registrar Trainer based in Northamptonshire, as well as a Versus Arthritis Core Skills Trainer.

Professor Phillip Conaghan

Professor Phillip Conaghan

Professor Philip Conaghan MBBS PhD FRACP FRCP is Director of the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre and Professor of Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Leeds, UK. His research focuses on understanding the causes of, and developing effective therapies for, common joint problems. He is a methodologist for the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) and Deputy Chair of the international outcomes group OMERACT. He previously chaired NICE osteoarthritis guidance.

Dr Matthew Roberts

Dr Matthew Roberts

Dr Matthew Roberts is a scientific researcher in exercise physiology, metabolic health, and immune function. His work explores the complex interactions between obesity, ethnicity, physical activity, inflammation, and chronic disease. Since 2020, he has contributed to over 25 peer-reviewed publications and regularly reviews for leading journals. His current research includes anti-inflammatory exercise interventions in Axial Spondyloarthritis and ageing of the immune system. Matthew also runs NHS-linked clinical trials and applies functional immunology techniques to study immune cell behaviour in chronic disease to understand how exercise improves clinical symptoms.

Charles Robards

Charlie loves anything to do with sport, especially cricket. Despite having suffered from axial SpA for over 30 years, he leads a very active life and lives with his wife Claire and his two children George and Grace, in Rugby Warwickshire. A fierce competitor on the pitch, Charlie is also known for his coaching and mentoring, his compassion and charity work, and possesses a burning desire to raise awareness of his condition.

Dr Dale Webb

Dr Dale Webb

Dr. Dale Webb is CEO of NASS. With an MSc and PhD in health policy, he first worked in public health in the NHS and then as a health services researcher, undertaking numerous national evaluations of health policy interventions. He has worked in senior leadership charity roles for more 20 years. Dale led the creation of an All Party Parliamentary Group on axial SpA, the development of the Aspiring to Excellence QI programme, and the Act on Axial SpA campaign. Dale is Deputy Chair of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance and a trustee of BRITSpA.

Professor Raj Sengupta

Prof Raj Sengupta is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Lead for Rheumatology and Axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA) at The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath (RNRHD). He is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) axSpA Biologics Guidelines Committee and a committee member of Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS). He has represented the BSR at the NICE TA383 appraisal for anti TNF in axSpA. Prof Sengupta is a medical advisor for the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society (NASS) and is one of the founder members of the British Society for SpondyloArthritis (BRITSpA). Prof Sengupta was the recipient of the 2016 NASS Patients Choice award for the Best Care provided by a Rheumatologist. Prof Sengupta is the principal investigator in several national and international clinical trials in axSpA. He has a number of peer reviewed publications on axSpA. Prof Sengupta has been an invited speaker on axSpA at several national and international meetings.

Dr Lizzy MacPhie

Dr Lizzy MacPhie is a Consultant Rheumatologist in Preston and Clinical Lead for theIntegrated Musculoskeletal Service. She works in a community based service and hasbeen involved with the tender and then mobilisation of a new integrated service which hasbeen a unique opportunity to be heavily involved with service redesign. Dr MacPhie hasheld the roles of Chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee and Chair of the Standards, Auditand Guidelines Working Group at the British Society for Rheumatology. She is a memberof the QCommunity and a founder member of the BSR QI Special Interest Group. She hasdeveloped a particular interest in Quality Improvement through her work with serviceredesign and is an advocate of sharing good practice. In 2023 she was appointed the ICBClinical and Care Professional Lead for Central and West Lancashire.
