PCRMM is pleased to endorse the new British Society for Rheumatology guideline on pain management in people with inflammatory arthritis.

Pain continues to be a significant issue for many people living with inflammatory arthritis, even when disease activity is well controlled. The guideline recognises the complex and multifactorial nature of pain and provides evidence-based recommendations for assessment and management across the life course.

The recommendations encourage routine assessment of pain, a holistic approach to identifying contributing factors, and greater use of evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions alongside appropriate pharmacological treatment. They also reinforce the importance of reviewing long-term analgesic and neuromodulator use and supporting shared decision-making with patients.

PCRMM welcomes this guideline and its recognition of the important contribution primary care teams make in supporting people with inflammatory arthritis to manage pain effectively.
